A New Writing Website, I'm A Winner, and Other Stuff:

I've been struggling for the past two weeks with what I wanted to write here. I'm resistant to the thought of going back to a "This is what I did today" format, so I'm trying to find interesting things to share on my blog. My friend, Patti, told me to write about my passion. Right now, that's writing--but not just my own, and I'll talk about that in a minute. Right now, I just want to say that things have changed a lot for me. I don't have as much free time as I did a year ago, but in many ways, that's a very good thing. It's forcing me to grow as a writer, to learn how to better manage my time, to learn discipline, to make time for what matters (even when it seems frivolous) rather than just doing whatever strikes my fancy in the moment. While that may be well and good for some people, it's very undisciplined, and one cannot be successful letting the winds take them every which way.

In an effort to earn some extra money while having fun with something I enjoy, I've become a part of a new Web site for writers. It's called Your Story Starters, and we're trying to gear it toward writers suffering from what many refer to as "writer's block," as well as teachers looking for material for their students. We offer prompts--story starters--that will get people thinking and, of course, writing. We've seen many sites on the Internet, many books, offering prompts. Most of them are very basic, or they're just plain weird or funny or--definitely not what we're offering. We try to give some tips and questions to get the writer or student thinking, to get them excited about the piece. We're not getting these prompts from other sources. We're putting a lot of time and effort into them because we want to offer the best product out there. We want to go above and beyond what everyone else is doing. We want to put out a product we can take pride in, something that people will recommend to others.

As a result of this, I'm learning a bit about social networking. I've had a Twitter account for a long time, as well as a Facebook account and a Google+ account, but I haven't used them as much as I could have. Mainly, they just seemed very overwhelming for someone who didn't really have anything to say most of the time. Now that I have something to talk about, I find I'm actually looking for things to Tweet or update about. And I'm finding I really love our hashtags (#yss and #yourstorystarters), even if we've only just begun using them. We're not making any money with this yet, but it's only a matter of time, right? The most important thing right now is that we're having fun, but we're also treating this as a real business, because that's what it is. It's work, and hard work at that, even if it is fun work. I'm glad to be a part of this, and I plan to do my part in making it the success I believe it can be.

In other news, Nanowrimo is coming up. I have no idea what I'll write. I haven't worked out any storylines. But I think I'd like to write some kind of fantasy. I have a D&D-style story I was working on, but I want to change it to fit my own fantasy world. The character names will all remain the same, but I'll have to tweak certain details. Should be interesting. I think for this year's Nanowrimo, I'll concentrate on the character's backstories. I should have plenty of information to come up with a novella length document.

I also have another story in the works. I'm working on the outline. It's slowgoing, and it's not for publication. It's for the roleplay. It's an interesting concept, and there's a lot to consider in this story. I want it to be complex, but interesting. Most of all, I need the characters to be real. Shouldn't be a problem. The hardest part is plotting, which is always the case, and I've got lots to go on in that regard. I'm still really loving my character, Dakota, too!

And now for the personal stuff. Eric and Chelsey have moved back up to Joplin. I won't go into detail, but Eric's already got a job, and he's also working on their new house with Chelsey's dad. It's a ton of work. Chelsey's been really busy, too. And Josiah's started pre-school. From what I've heard, he really loves it.

Jeff's still working at the greenhouse, and I still can't help wondering when they'll "go out of business" again or something, but I'm trying to stay positive and learn contentment where I am. Most of the time, it's relatively easy, but there are times when it's not. Just need to keep from letting those times bog me down. Easier said than done. 'Nuf said?

My mom's here. She's been here for more than two months. It's been a good visit. I feel kind of guilty spending so much time back in the studio working on this or that, but we get time to socialize in the evenings, too. And I imagine she loves the peace and quiet as much as I do.

We're hoping to go up to Joplin before my mom goes back. When the kids moved back up there, we went with them. Jeff drove the truck, and I kept him company. This was when Isaac came through, but it wasn't really that bad. It was kind of nice, actually. And as always, it was great to see Jeff's dad and step-mom. We want to go up there again within the next six weeks. We need to sit down and discuss when would be a good time. We'll also need to head to the airport at some point, when my mom has to fly back home.

Oh! One other thing on the subject of writing--sort of. I actually won a book! I follow The Plot Whisperer, Martha Alderson, on Twitter and Facebook. I also subscribe to her email, since I tend to miss a lot of tweets and status updates. In one of the most recent e-mails, I saw that she was doing a mini tour on the Internet, and I could possibly win her new book, The Plot Whisperer Workbook: Step-By-Step Exercises To Help You Create Compelling Stories. All I had to do was comment on an entry to be eligible. I didn't expect to win anything, but I wanted to comment and let my support for The Plot Whisperer be known. I figured I'd buy the workbook after a little while, so winning wasn't really all that important to me. But I won! I actually won! :D So far, I really love it. It asks a lot of really great questions about the plot, the characters, etc. I plan to use this for my Nanowrimo book of backstories, too. It should help make my characters and their world ever more complex and realistic, as well as the main story, when I get around to creating it.

Nanowrimo, Days 15-21:

It's been several days since I've posted my progress, so thought I should do that today. I've written every day this month (so far) except for the 11th, 12th, 18th, and 19th. That's 16 days' worth of writing, and only one of those was under the suggested daily amount of 1,667 words. I'm not stressing over the word count. I enjoy writing, and I write as much as I can each day. That said, looking back on what I've written, it's nice to see my stats:

Tuesday, Nov. 15 -- Daily Word Count: 4,010 | Novel's Word Count: 35,150

Wednesday, Nov. 16 -- Daily Word Count: 3,935 | Novel's Word Count: 39,085

Thursday, Nov. 17 -- Daily Word Count: 1,806 | Novel's Word Count: 47,475

Sunday, Nov. 20 -- Daily Word Count: 2,898 | Novel's Word Count: 50,373

Monday, Nov. 21 -- Daily Word Count: 1,606 | Novel's Word Count: 52,044
I hope to write a little bit more. I'm about to add a new scene for Dakota. So far, the additions for his part in the storyline are going well. And now Lucky's about to meet his real dad, which really pleases me! :)

Anyway, I'm still just as excited about this story as I was when I first started planning it. I'm also looking forward to working on future stories for the series. Maybe I'll even turn them into movie scripts. Wouldn't that be something? :D

Nanowrimo, Days 13 & 14:

I didn't write anything on Friday and Saturday, but yesterday and today, I managed to add a good amount to Raven's Dawn, my Nano novel:
Sunday -- Daily Word Count: 4,342 | Novel's Word Count: 27,616
Monday -- Daily word Count: 3,524 | Novel's Word Count: 31,140
I've begun adding the scenes for Dakota...the scenes that will carry into future stories. And I've shown a bit more of Lucky's relationship with his "father," Lucas Raven. At times, it's been very slow going, and it'll need a lot of editing. I have an aversion to editing, but I'll need to do it.

But right now, I'm concentrating on the rough draft. After that, I'll put it away for a while and work on my screenplay. I need to read it, then make some notes on changes I want to make. After that, I'll write a treatment, then start on the second draft. I can't wait! :D

But first, I have to finish the rough draft of this novel. I love this story, and I'm really enjoying the process. :)

Nanowrimo, Days Eight and Nine:

I didn't write at all yesterday, but last night, I went to the write-in at Moka Joe's and managed to squeeze out a fair amount of words. And I did some writing this morning, too. Hopefully, I can write a bit more in a little while.

My stats for the past two days:
Day Eight -- Daily Total: 2,193 | Novel's Total: 19,603
Day Nine -- Daily Total: 1,970 | Novel's Total: 21,573
I haven't yet written the bit about Dakota that I wanted to. That will start with the next scene, I think. I just have to figure out how it comes about, then I'm good to go. :)

Nanowrimo, Days Four through Seven:

I've been busy, but not just with Raven's Dawn. Still, I've exceeded the minimum goal every day except one, so far. Here are my stats for the past few days:
  • Friday, Day Four -- Daily Word Count: 502 | Novel's Word Count: 10,205
  • Saturday, Day Five -- Daily Word Count: 3,633 | Novel's Word Count: 13,838
  • Sunday, Day Six -- Daily Word count: 1,784 | Novel's Word Count: 15,622
  • Monday, Day Seven (so far) -- Daily Word Count: 1,788 | Novel's Word Count (so far): 17,410
Over the past few days, Lucky has found out that his mother's lung cancer is no longer in remission, and she has only a few months to live, at the most. He is devastated, and if it weren't for one older brother and his friend, Dakota, he'd be in much worse shape than he is.

And as if that wasn't enough, he and his best friend are about to have a run-in with the school bully.

But good things are coming. Can't have all the bad without giving him some good stuff too, right? :)

Out of 71+ scenes, I've only written 17. I've combined some of them into chapters, but I doubt I'll be doing much more of that, which means I've got a long way to go. Good! I like it that way! :D

And that's how it's going, so far.

Nanowrimo, Days Two and Three:

First of all, why the heck are the subject lines in my LJ Twitter posts in Russian? I'm not Russian. I'm American! :/

My final word count for Tuesday (Day One) was 5,142. Three chapters of fairly decent length. Go me! :D

Yesterday, I added 2,355 words, three short chapters, which brought my word count to 7,497.

Today I wrote one chapter, but it's a fairly good one in which I introduce all the Ravens (that's not all there is to it...there's more). It's not a boring chapter. It just doesn't have a lot of action or angst in it. It came to 2,206 words, bringing my total to 9,703. It was really slow going at first, but once it got going, I almost didn't want to stop. But I had other things to do, so I behaved myself. :)

I'll work on the next chapter at some point tomorrow. I'll introduce Lucky's mom's ongoing battle with lung cancer (she has never smoked, but her husband's a virtual chimney, not to mention a nasty alcoholic).

I'm really looking forward to the chapter after that though, as it involves Dakota protecting Lucky and basically setting their friendship in motion, so to speak, even though he's ten years older than the young teen. :)

So, I've been busy! LOL I'm still loving my story. In fact, I love it more with every new chapter I write! I kind of want to write another one now, but I'm going to wait. I just don't have the time at the moment.

Summary: Done!

I've finally finished the summary for my new story, thanks to the patience and brilliant input of a friend of mine. Now I have two people reading it to look for inconsistencies; needed changes, additions, etc.; and anything else that needs to be fixed.

Tomorrow, I plan to work on a couple of character journal entries. One will be connected to this new story, and one is part of a blog story I've been working on. I'm more happy about this than any person has a right to be! :D

And to top that off, I looked out through the window a few minutes ago and saw this:

Breathtaking, isn't it? :)

And now, I'm about to get off here and relax. It's getting late, and I need some time to unwind before bed.

Have a good one!

Lucky!

I've written a new character journal entry for Lucky Raven, and I've set up a new, mostly private journal just for him. It's taken longer than I'd hoped, but he's worth it. He's still my favorite out of all my characters, and I have a feeling he always will be. :)

Unfortunately, the story he's currently a part of isn't his story. I'll have to come up with other things for him to write about while I'm working on Buck's story. Piece of cake...I hope. ;)

And now I need to go take a quick shower, then I'd like to brainstorm for a bit later, since I haven't had a chance to do any of that yet today.

Have a good one!

Brainstorming the New Story

I've been brainstorming a new story. It takes place in the Raven story-verse, and Lucky appears in it, if only to show the villain's purpose and how far he'll go to "get even" with the hero, Buck L.

I have information on the three main "good" characters. I still need to gather information on the villain. I have his name and a tiny bit of his background. I even have a character model for him. YAY! :D

And I've been brainstorming ideas for the story. There's lots of danger and intrigue, romantic entanglements, humor, frustration, a murder / attempted murder, and complications (though I need to add more to keep the suspense going in the saggy middle).

This has been a blast, and I'm far from finished. I hope to have some friends look at my summary when it's done to give me valuable input.

Lucky has already written a character journal entry, too. :) I need to have the others write some. It helps me get into their heads better. I love that!

Anyway, that's what I've been up to lately. As always happens when I'm working on a story, other things have taken a back seat, such as my knitting. I hope to work on my cardigan later this afternoon, but we'll see. When I'm involved in a story, it's hard to drop it for something else, but I'll try. ;)

Have a good one!

I'm Working Again!

Yesterday, I wrote the first two pages of a new story. I only wrote two pages because I had to do a lot of research, too. Today, I wrote down things about the three main characters--the hero, his best friend, and another character who plays a very large role in the story. Tomorrow, I'll brainstorm with paper and pen while I babysit. I look forward to the challenge. I just wish I could get some help!

Oh, and this story takes place in the Raven universe. My two main characters know Lucky, his brothers (John and Joey), and his father (Ten). In fact, the main character's best friend is also a very close friend to Lucky. It's a small, small world, after all! :P I haven't yet decided if Lucky will make an appearance. He probably won't, since it takes place in Hawai'i, but there might be mention of him, at least.

And now, I've got to run.

Have a good one!

Floating away...

It's a soggy mess here, and I just found out from Chelsey that today's our biggest chance for severe weather so far this season. Aaarrrgh! Yesterday evening, the skies here became greenish, and we had high winds (I actually saw some rotation in the clouds above us), torrential rainfall, and frequent, dangerous lightning. I am not looking forward to a repeat of that! Funny thing is, this all happened some time after my dad and step-mom called to see if we were alright. O_o Our yards are looking like swamps, again. Yesterday, I asked Jeff if he thinks we should build an ark! :P

In other news, I've got some great ideas for my Immortal Watchdogs: Damian of Crete character's modern story. I need to jot them down and brainstorm for a bit.

I also need to finish the Kindle e-Book I started yesterday. I only have, I think, three days left to finish it.

I'll be babysitting Josiah tomorrow. Thankfully, I'll be able to babysit him at Eric and Chelsey's place. We still have too many fleas!

Anyway, I need to hurry up and get off here. We've got some distant lightning and thunder, and I don't want to tempt fate.

Pre-10K Day Post -- More Wild Weather

Since finishing my screenplay last week, I've been preparing for tomorrow's 10K Day. I have two stories in mind. One is from my Immortal Watchdogs series. The other is a character journal story I've begun writing (the whole story is told in blog form). I took a couple of days off over the weekend, and I've been scrambling around for ideas over the past two days. I've got good beginnings to both stories, so I think I'm ready.

And if I'm not, I'll write anyway, because I'm cool that way! :)

It looks like we're in for a rough night again tonight. Storms are already beginning to pop up. We could have anything from larger-than-baseball-sized hail, to tornadoes, to wind gusts to 70 mph, to dangerous lightning. They're saying "explosive [thunderstorm] development is expected along cold front this afternoon as it encounters a strongly unstable air mass." This could get very...interesting, to say the least.

Needless to say, prayers would be appreciated. If I live through this, I'll update tomorrow.

Thank you!

Storms & Script Frenzy, The Past Few Days

First, the storms. We survived them alright, thank God! I was praying they'd fizzle by the time they reached us; and wouldn't you know it, once they crossed the river, they began to weaken, and they lost their rotation. Greenwood got hit, though, as did other places further south.

I watched the local storm coverage until about eleven o'clock, then I went to bed. Before I quit for the night, I found out that one person died in Atoka County, Oklahoma, and another person was injured (broken leg, knee, etc.) when their trailer flipped over. I can't remember where that happened, but I'm glad the person is alright. Too bad about the other, though. :(

Second, Script Frenzy. I've finished my screenplay! :D

You see? When you have a thorough enough outline, and know how the story's supposed to end, you can finish the first draft of a project rather quickly! :)

It's funny. At several points, I went back and changed things in the outline, like where the major conflicts were going to take place (I was going to have them all go to Mexico, where the Inciting Incident occurred, but decided I wanted everything to happen in Xander's hometown. It worked out much better this way). Another change was that I was going to kill off the villain's younger brother, but things just didn't work out the way I'd planned it.

I'm happy with the overall story. I know it needs a ton of revising, but that will have to wait. I'm setting this story aside for a while so I can work on other things, including my script from last year. It still needs to be revised and rewritten.

Anyway, my screenplay ends at 101 pages plus a cover page, so on the Script Frenzy Web site, it shows up as 102 pages.

And now I'm off to work on other things--like brainstorming and outlining what I'm going to write during this coming Wednesday's 10K Day for Writers! :)

Days 10 & 11 of Script Frenzy 2011:

I took Friday and Saturday off from writing. Friday ended up being mostly a reading day. Saturday was Jeff's only day off, and we spent part of it together, and part of it getting caught up on stuff (for me, it was Internet stuff, and for him, it was outdoor stuff).

Yesterday, it was a bit hard for me to get back into the swing of things. It was really cloudy, and I just didn't feel much like writing. However, once I sat down and started writing, the words began to flow, and I added 5 new pages to my screenplay! :D

This morning got off to a rocky start when I took Nikita for a walk. We got down pretty close to the goat yard, which is at the end of the road. We've gone by there many, many times, and it's never been a problem. This morning, though, was odd. We didn't even make it that far and she began making little raspy, growly barks. Then she slipped out of her collar and ran home. Now, if this had happened several months ago, I would have had no idea where she'd gone, and I was kind of concerned with the way she hightailed it back the way we came. But when I reached the house, she was waiting for me at the door. That in itself is a miracle! But what freaked her out? I can only begin to guess at what might have sent her running away like that. A snake? Coyotes? Foxes? I didn't see anything out of the ordinary. I heard a bunch of dogs, but that's normal, as neighbors back behind us have several. Come to think of it, they were louder than usual. Maybe they got loose and were headed up our way, but if they did, I never saw them. I'm just glad she went straight to our door and waited!

So, once things settled down a little, and I readjusted her collar, we went back outside. We just stayed close to the house, and I still didn't see anything out of the ordinary. Go figure!

Once we were in for good, I came back to my studio and caught up online. Then I set to work on my screenplay. I read over the next section of my outline and went to work on the script. I added ten new pages today! :D

Wow! I am so on a roll! :) I made some simple adjustments to the outline, then closed it out. I uploaded my script into the ScriptFrenzy validator, and it shows that I've written 69 pages (although one of those is the cover page, so really, I'm at 68 pages).

I'll work on it more tomorrow, but now I'm about to grab some leftovers from last night's dinner, then I'll straighten up / organize my studio. After that, I need a shower, then I want to finish my knit sock. I'm so close to the end, and it's calling out for me to finish it! :P

Have a good one,

Lois

Day 7 of Script Frenzy 2011:

Just a very brief update. I've just added four pages to my screenplay, bringing the current total to 53 pages.

I've added some good stuff: the villain has stated his true intentions to his brother, and they will fight together for revenge (or justice, from their point of view).

And I've added more conflict between the main character's brother and his girlfriend...important to the subplot.

And now I'm quitting early so I can spend some time on my knitting. :)

Lois

Day 6 of Script Frenzy 2011:

I've been busy today, to be sure! Last night, I went through my outline, comparing it to the eight sequences listed in the articles I linked to yesterday. I made several changes to the outline, and then set about transcribing those changes this morning.

Then I started work on the screenplay. I had to go back and make some changes, and I think I ended up deleting a total of 2-3 pages. It could even have been more than that.

Once I finally got to a really good stopping point, I found out I'd added 14 new pages to the screenplay today (although I could have written up to 17, maybe more).

This story is getting better and better, and it's starting to make more sense. I really am having a great time.

An extra bonus is that I'm reconnecting with one of my favorite characters. :) And I may be onto something in the way of a future story starring Xander's younger brother, Zane. This would make me very, very happy! :D

You can view my Script Frenzy profile page over here. I'm thinking of adding a short excerpt soon, but not today. I've been at this for so long, my eyes are about to cross! :P

Who says hard work doesn't pay?

Day 5 of Script Frenzy 2011:

A picture I found online and edited
Today has been another very productive day. I've written several short scenes establishing my main character's return home and how it seems like a different world than the one he left fifteen years ago. I've also added a little suspense, and started on the two subplots (which tie in nicely with the Character Emotional Development Plotline).

My page count now sits at 35, not counting the cover page, and at this rate, I'll be finished long before the end of the month. I still have a monologue to write for a Twitter friend, so maybe I can actually work that in, too. ;) (Speaking of which, I think I've finally got an inkling of the subject matter, so I can start jotting down ideas!)

If you want to view my profile on the Script Frenzy Web site, you can find it here.

I'm so glad I know my character well. It makes it so much easier to write the story. The hard part is trying to keep my descriptions / action "short, active, and essential." (This last part was taken from an excellent, albeit very short, article on action vs. dialogue, by Jeffrey Alan Schechter.)

I'd planned on comparing my outline to some articles I printed out about the major sequences in a movie yesterday, but I never found the time, so I'm going to do that now. Here are the links to the articles (because these are great for any story told using the three-act structure):

What's A Sequence?
Sequences and Acts
Sequences: Two Principles
The Eight Sequences

This Web site is invaluable to anyone writing a script, or any story, really.

Oh, and here are two great questionnaires to help you with your storytelling:

Character Questionnaire
Story Questionnaire

Okay, back to work. :)

Day 4 of Script Frenzy 2011:

Sometimes I surprise myself with how much I can actually do when I put my mind to it. Yesterday, I only managed a mere two pages, but I considered it progress, considering how crappy I was feeling. This morning, I still felt pretty crappy, but I was determined to write as much of ACT I as I could with the hope of finishing it.

My script currently sits at page 23 (24 if you count the cover page, but of course, I don't), and ACT I is finished. My character is about to return home, but he'll find that home has changed...or he has...and he will feel very much like a fish out of water.

ACT I began with my character's past, and the end of this brought about changes that will drive the middle forward, as his past will come back to haunt him and endanger those he cares about. He will also struggle to find his place in the lives of his family and friends, the most important of whom will not want to have anything to do with him.

Yes, my character is in for a bumpy ride, but hopefully, all will end well for him and he'll live to see another script...er...day.

Needless to say, I feel very accomplished today. I want to rush into the next part, full speed ahead, but I'm trying very hard to keep myself in check. No need to overdo it, right? After all, I wrote about eleven pages today!

Maybe I'll work on his outline for a bit. An outline can't be tweaked too much, after all...

Lois

Day 3 of Script Frenzy 2011:

I took yesterday off from writing and outlining. It wasn't intentional, but it wasn't unexpected, either. Saturday is Jeff's only day off for a while, so I took it off, too.

Today was a different story. I worked on my outline, moving things around, adding a few details, etc.

Then I managed to write a couple more pages, so it's now at 12 pages (plus the cover page).

I left off where Xander's family are notified of "his demise," and when I resume writing tomorrow, I'll be starting at his "funeral."

Today, my eyes have been bothering me (pollen), and so has my stomach. I'm really tired and lacking in energy, so it's good I got done what I did. I should be feeling a lot better tomorrow, so I'll likely get a lot more done than I did today. :)

Lois

Day 1 of Script Frenzy 2011:

I've surpassed today's official page count goal of 3.3 pages. I wrote almost 9 pages (9 minutes' worth of film time) in my screenplay! :D

I had to do some research. I chose a different "era" for my story, which gave me a real war for the beginning. This also clarified which area of the Middle East Xander would be in, and I even found a hospital for him to wake up in after his almost-mortal wounding.

Things are moving along nicely for me. For Xander, not so much. ;)

I'm babysitting for a couple hours (or so) later on, but I'm hoping to get some work in on the outline, too.

It's been a great Day One! :D
