A New Writing Website, I'm A Winner, and Other Stuff:

I've been struggling for the past two weeks with what I wanted to write here. I'm resistant to the thought of going back to a "This is what I did today" format, so I'm trying to find interesting things to share on my blog. My friend, Patti, told me to write about my passion. Right now, that's writing--but not just my own, and I'll talk about that in a minute. Right now, I just want to say that things have changed a lot for me. I don't have as much free time as I did a year ago, but in many ways, that's a very good thing. It's forcing me to grow as a writer, to learn how to better manage my time, to learn discipline, to make time for what matters (even when it seems frivolous) rather than just doing whatever strikes my fancy in the moment. While that may be well and good for some people, it's very undisciplined, and one cannot be successful letting the winds take them every which way.

In an effort to earn some extra money while having fun with something I enjoy, I've become a part of a new Web site for writers. It's called Your Story Starters, and we're trying to gear it toward writers suffering from what many refer to as "writer's block," as well as teachers looking for material for their students. We offer prompts--story starters--that will get people thinking and, of course, writing. We've seen many sites on the Internet, many books, offering prompts. Most of them are very basic, or they're just plain weird or funny or--definitely not what we're offering. We try to give some tips and questions to get the writer or student thinking, to get them excited about the piece. We're not getting these prompts from other sources. We're putting a lot of time and effort into them because we want to offer the best product out there. We want to go above and beyond what everyone else is doing. We want to put out a product we can take pride in, something that people will recommend to others.

As a result of this, I'm learning a bit about social networking. I've had a Twitter account for a long time, as well as a Facebook account and a Google+ account, but I haven't used them as much as I could have. Mainly, they just seemed very overwhelming for someone who didn't really have anything to say most of the time. Now that I have something to talk about, I find I'm actually looking for things to Tweet or update about. And I'm finding I really love our hashtags (#yss and #yourstorystarters), even if we've only just begun using them. We're not making any money with this yet, but it's only a matter of time, right? The most important thing right now is that we're having fun, but we're also treating this as a real business, because that's what it is. It's work, and hard work at that, even if it is fun work. I'm glad to be a part of this, and I plan to do my part in making it the success I believe it can be.

In other news, Nanowrimo is coming up. I have no idea what I'll write. I haven't worked out any storylines. But I think I'd like to write some kind of fantasy. I have a D&D-style story I was working on, but I want to change it to fit my own fantasy world. The character names will all remain the same, but I'll have to tweak certain details. Should be interesting. I think for this year's Nanowrimo, I'll concentrate on the character's backstories. I should have plenty of information to come up with a novella length document.

I also have another story in the works. I'm working on the outline. It's slowgoing, and it's not for publication. It's for the roleplay. It's an interesting concept, and there's a lot to consider in this story. I want it to be complex, but interesting. Most of all, I need the characters to be real. Shouldn't be a problem. The hardest part is plotting, which is always the case, and I've got lots to go on in that regard. I'm still really loving my character, Dakota, too!

And now for the personal stuff. Eric and Chelsey have moved back up to Joplin. I won't go into detail, but Eric's already got a job, and he's also working on their new house with Chelsey's dad. It's a ton of work. Chelsey's been really busy, too. And Josiah's started pre-school. From what I've heard, he really loves it.

Jeff's still working at the greenhouse, and I still can't help wondering when they'll "go out of business" again or something, but I'm trying to stay positive and learn contentment where I am. Most of the time, it's relatively easy, but there are times when it's not. Just need to keep from letting those times bog me down. Easier said than done. 'Nuf said?

My mom's here. She's been here for more than two months. It's been a good visit. I feel kind of guilty spending so much time back in the studio working on this or that, but we get time to socialize in the evenings, too. And I imagine she loves the peace and quiet as much as I do.

We're hoping to go up to Joplin before my mom goes back. When the kids moved back up there, we went with them. Jeff drove the truck, and I kept him company. This was when Isaac came through, but it wasn't really that bad. It was kind of nice, actually. And as always, it was great to see Jeff's dad and step-mom. We want to go up there again within the next six weeks. We need to sit down and discuss when would be a good time. We'll also need to head to the airport at some point, when my mom has to fly back home.

Oh! One other thing on the subject of writing--sort of. I actually won a book! I follow The Plot Whisperer, Martha Alderson, on Twitter and Facebook. I also subscribe to her email, since I tend to miss a lot of tweets and status updates. In one of the most recent e-mails, I saw that she was doing a mini tour on the Internet, and I could possibly win her new book, The Plot Whisperer Workbook: Step-By-Step Exercises To Help You Create Compelling Stories. All I had to do was comment on an entry to be eligible. I didn't expect to win anything, but I wanted to comment and let my support for The Plot Whisperer be known. I figured I'd buy the workbook after a little while, so winning wasn't really all that important to me. But I won! I actually won! :D So far, I really love it. It asks a lot of really great questions about the plot, the characters, etc. I plan to use this for my Nanowrimo book of backstories, too. It should help make my characters and their world ever more complex and realistic, as well as the main story, when I get around to creating it.

Photos!

Jeff and I took my mom over to Eric and Chelsey's on Sunday, and I got a bunch of pictures and videos. I'll try to post a video or two sometime later this week. In the meantime, here are a few of the better photos, though some of them are somewhat blurry, and I apologize for that. Hope you like them anyway!

I also took a couple shots of this morning's sunrise.

OMG! A Real Update!!!!!

lmeighmy
Wow! I just realized yesterday afternoon that I haven't posted anything but the devos and my Nanowrimo progress in a long time, so thought I'd post something today.

In fact, there hasn't really been much going on here, which would account for my not posting anything lately. The biggest news is that our washing machine has gone kaput. We've used the laundromat for the past two weekends, washing them there and bringing them home to dry in our dryer, which is also, I'm sure, on its last leg. And Jeff has a makeshift clothesline outside on which he hangs his jeans. I won't let him hang my clothes out there.

Speaking of Jeff, he's still working, but he's not bringing home the pay he was making before the layoffs. I guess that won't happen until sometime in January...if we're lucky. Things are pretty tight right now. Thanksgiving and Christmas will be pretty lean.

The kids' check engine light has come on, so they're taking it easy on their car. Eric's still making it to work, but they're not driving all the way out here to do their laundry (and of course, why would they want to when all we have is a dryer anyway?), so they've been using the same laundromat we use. They seem to be doing well. We took them to the grocery store on Saturday, then visited with them for a few minutes afterward. We'd totally forgotten about the groceries in the trunk! :P

I saw some picture's of Leah's baby, Cyrus, on the Internet. He's so cute! :D

This past weekend, Jeff stayed inside with the laundry while I went out to the car to write. It was his suggestion. It seemed I'd barely gotten started when the laundry was done! :P

I've been cutting back on carbs lately. I think I've cut the amount in half, at least, and probably more. I'm not really counting them. I'm just being more mindful of how much I eat, and if I fix something that has lots of carbs (like potatoes or pasta), I take a lot less, or I pass on it altogether. I'm certainly not going hungry, and that's a good thing. I'm just hoping I can lose some weight this way. It will take time, but I need to do it. I feel much, much better when I'm thinner.

I added 2,266 words to my novel last night at the write-in. That brought my day's word count to 5,354 and my novel's word count to 32,982! Today, I'll be getting into some more interesting writing, and I'm really excited about it. I should have no problem reaching 40K by Friday afternoon. :)

Oh! My betta died. :( He was doing so well, then the temps took a nosedive and he just couldn't handle the colder temperatures. At least, I'm pretty sure that's what the problem was. I was changing his water every week and refilling it with water from the large aquarium. All the other fish and frogs are doing great, so it can't be the water. I don't think I'll be getting another betta until the spring. Hopefully, by then, we'll be able to afford a small aquarium with a heater.

I've begun reading 'Salem's Lot, by Stephen King. So far, it's really good, but the scariest thing has been an encounter the main character had with a ghost(?) when he was nine. He was telling the story to someone else. It wasn't really that scary, but I'm sure the book will get a lot more so as I continue reading. :) One thing I really like about King is his ability to describe everything without making it feel dry and boring. He's really, really good at it.

I've also discovered the music group, 30 Seconds to Mars. I mostly listen to Christian rock with a little secular music mixed in. I stumbled across 30 Seconds to Mars one day and I fell in love with their sound. :) Disciple and Manic Drive are still my favorites though, followed closely by Forever and 30 Seconds to Mars. ;)

Well, I've got to get off here and get to writing. Here's hoping the rest of your week is a great one!

Another Somewhat Off Day

lmeighmyToday's another so-so day for me. It's cloudy here, and I'm sure that has a little bit to do with it, but that's not all there is to it.

I plan to work on my screenplay in a little while. I'll also work on editing one of my short stories. And I want to do a little writing from a prompt.

Jeff and I played Apples To Apples with Eric and Chelsey last night. It was fun, but I wasn't in the greatest mood when we played. I was feeling pretty moody all day, and I'm rarely like that. I'm not quite as bad today, but who knows how things will turn out?

I have jury duty on Monday. In the beginning, they divided us into two groups. I've been in Group One, and we've been meeting at the Division One courtroom. Monday, they're calling for Groups One and Two to meet at the Division two courtroom. We're doing our grocery shopping tonight, so this will give us a chance to find where I have to go before Monday morning.

Incidentally, my jury duty coincides with Eric and Chelsey's dental appointments. The funny thing here is that Jeff will be watching Josiah. So far, he's managed to get by without having to change any diapers. He may very well have to change them on Monday, since there's no telling when jury duty will end. ;)

I'm hoping to watch Mukhbiir again later. I haven't watched it in a while, and I'm eager to see Sammir Dattani, Sunil Shetty, and Om Puri in action again. :)

Have a great day!

Lois

Quick Update

lmeighmyI wrote two feedbacks yesterday, but never got to my assignment for the FoW CP training. Milli suggested that I concentrate on two feedbacks a day, then I'll have Thursday and Friday free to work on the assignment, so that's what I'm going to do.

And, hopefully, I can go to Sweet Bay tonight. It'll depend on how Jeff and I feel.

We got a call from my mom yesterday. She said Lyle (my brother-in-law) wanted me to call and talk to Kathy (my sister) about when we'd like to have my mom come to visit. I told her I'd call back, but I haven't been able to get a hold of Kathy yet. I'm thinking anytime after April will be fine, and Jeff agrees. I'm going to send her an e-mail, as well as still trying to call her. One way or another, I'll get a hold of her.

Also, Eric and Chelsey are planning a birthday party for Josiah. They're going to have it here. I need to invite a few people, too.

Well, I need to hurry up and get to work on today's feedbacks.

Have a great one!

Baby X 2

Well, now I feel old! I'm about to be a grandma...again!

Scratch that...I don't feel old. I'm just too young to be a grandma! But I'm soooo excited! :D

Beautiful, Sunny Day Here Today!

Our New Year's was great! The lasagna turned out excellent, and so did the garlic bread. :) We heard from my sister and my dad and step-mom. While my mom was on the phone with my dad and step-mom, Jeff and I looked out the window and watched some distant fireworks. I guess they had some going on in Fort Smith. We could see them from our house, so that was pretty awesome! :D

We watched Cold Mountain, which was good (but would have been a lot better without the nudity).

I wrote a character journal yesterday. It was over 2k words, but I'm not sure of the exact word count. I'd like to write more later today, but first Jeff and I are planning on doing a little shopping. I need a couple of new outfits.

I'd like to do some more reading, too.

Tomorrow we'll do our grocery shopping. I may not get to do any "real" writing until Sunday. :(

Anyway, I hope all of you have a great New Year's Day! :D

Quick Update

I don't have a lot of time to post. We're getting ready to go grocery shopping, then we'll be going to the TGIO Party: Dinner and a movie (New Moon)! :D

Eric and Chelsey have friends over and they'll be coming home to stay with my mom. We'll be picking up dinner for them.

I've got the confirmation for my mom's return trip in my inbox. I need to let my sister know I got it.

And that's it for now. I don't know when I'll be back on here...probably not until tomorrow morning.

Have an awesome weekend!

My Own Personal 10K Day!

I'm starting a bit late for my personal 10K Day today, but I'm about to get started. I had an e-mail to write to my Nanowrimo mentees, and that took a bit of time. But now I'm ready to work on Xander's backstory. I came up with several ideas last night, and I'm looking forward to writing them up.

I won't be on here until later this afternoon or evening. I'm hoping to get 10K, of course, and I'm really going to push myself today.

My mom's here and is settled in. She had a good flight and got to see Eric, Chelsey and Josiah last night. Poor little guy's still sick, but he seemed like he was in good spirits. I think Eric and Chelsey are still sick, too. Eric's voice was really bad, but it sounded like it was getting better last night.

Jeff thinks he may be coming down with it now. He and I have been taking Airbourne and Cold Eeze and taking vitamins, so hopefully that'll keep the cold/ flu at bay. I need to see if my mom can take those.

Well, I'd better get to it. I want to get to 80K as soon as possible. I want to revise it when I'm done. I want to publish this thing! :D

Have a great day!

Lois
